Notes for Maintenance Intervals

We hear a lot about maintenance intervals these days, particularly in regards to the recommended length of time between oil changes. The truth is that your car is affected by its age and by your driving habits, which means that it must be treated like an individual.
First, make certain that your technician is familiar with the type of driving you do and where you do it. For example, the manufacturer of your new vehicle may recommend oil/filer change intervals of 7500 miles under normal operating conditions. However, the manufacturer’s definition of “normal operating conditions” is usually very narrow.

The fact is, you may be a severe service driver and not even know it. You may do lots of stop and go driving in traffic, make lots of short trips, or drive in dusty or otherwise harsh conditions. You may have a lead foot, tow a camper or carry a heavy load in your truck bed. If any of these sounds like you, you’re probably a severe service driver.
The best advice is to check out what your owner’s manual, then talk with your service advisor. He or she will discuss maintenance intervals with you designed to keep your vehicle reliable and efficient, no matter what your driving habits may be.

EXAMPLE: MANUFACTURER DEFINITION OF SEVERE CONDITIONS FOR A

1998 Oldsmobile Truck Silhouette V6-3.4L VIN E

Follow the SEVERE schedule if any one of the following are true:

  • Most trips are less than 5 to 10 miles (8 to 16 km). This is particularly important when outside temperatures are below freezing.
  • Most trips include extensive idling (such as frequent driving in stop and go traffic).
  • The vehicle is operated in dusty areas frequently.
  • Trailer towing or using a carrier on top of the vehicle frequently.
  • The vehicle is used for delivery service, police, taxi or other commercial applications.

NOTES:
Some vehicle manufacturers provide separate maintenance procedures for vehicles operated under Severe or Special circumstances. Other manufacturers provide recommendations for service at more frequent intervals for vehicles operated under severe conditions. For any vehicle operated under severe conditions, as defined by the vehicles manufacturer, always check the regular maintenance schedule for procedures that may not appear at the similar interval under severe service, see Example 1.

Example 1:
Manufacturer recommends tire rotation at 10,000 mile intervals under regular maintenance. There is no tire rotation recommendation shown in the severe service schedule, which has 3,000 mile intervals.

At a minimum, recommend rotation at 9,000 and 18,000 mile intervals etc., or as close to the regular schedule as possible. Depending on vehicle usage and obvious tire wear, this recommendation should be increased as necessary.

Also, some vehicle manufacturers provide only a single schedule (Normal) for all driving conditions. Some of the components listed in the schedule may have notes describing alternate service intervals for that component depending on driving conditions,
see Example 2.

Example 2:
Many vehicles have an “Engine Oil Life Monitor” lamp which can illuminate anytime between intervals depending on driving conditions. The oil should then be replaced at that time, regardless of mileage, and the “Engine Oil Life Monitor” reset.

Follow the NORMAL schedule only if none of the conditions from the SEVERE schedule apply.

NOTE: Some vehicle manufacturers provide only a single schedule (Normal) for all driving conditions. Some of the components listed in the schedule may have notes describing alternate service intervals for that component depending on driving conditions, see Example.
Example:
Many vehicles have an “Engine Oil Life Monitor” lamp which can illuminate anytime between intervals depending on driving conditions. The oil should then be replaced at that time, regardless of mileage, and the “Engine Oil Life Monitor” reset.
